chapter eight
I remember at that moment thinking that he really did belong on a movie magazine cover. He had that sparkle and glow about him that I saw in pictures of Motherâs celebrities. She always said some people were simply photogenic. âThey canât take a bad picture no matter how you surprise them.â Lee was that sort of person.
I wondered if I was so infatuated with him only because Gloria seemed to be. I was thinking so hard about all this while I looked at him that I didnât see Gloria or anything else, for that matter, just him. After a moment, I realized Gloria was staring at me with an amused smile on her face. Was my infatuation with him so obvious? Did he see or sense it, too? He crossed over to my side after Gloria handed him a racket, his eyes so fixed on me that I couldnât move for a moment.
As I started away, he reached out to seize my arm.
âHow are you feeling today, Gish? First hangover?â he asked, with an annoyingly amused smile. I hated being thought of as a younger girl, a naive and overly protected one as well.
âIâm fine. Donât get gray hairs and wrinkles over it,â I said, and joined Gloria.
âIâm in great danger,â he joked.
I looked at Gloria.
âLee, letâs play,â she said.
âRight, boss.â
He served the birdie, and I slammed it back so fast and hard he didnât have a chance of returning it.
âWhoa. Guess you are feeling fine,â he said.
âGish has a good return. Always,â Gloria said.
âIâd better remember that,â he said. He served again.
For the next twenty minutes or so, we had him running in every direction. We gave high fives to congratulate each other. He moaned and groaned about being victimized. His ego was a bit bruised. A few times, he really slammed it back, but overall, he couldnât keep up with us. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Mr. OâSullivan watching us with that familiar look of disapproval. Two spoiled rich girls.
âI think Iâm outgunned,â Lee finally conceded. âCanât beat the John sisters when they gang up on you.â
âWe have some beer in the casita and some lunch,â Gloria told him. He took off his shirt and wiped his face with it.
âBetter workout than basketball practice,â he said.
âWe have a shower in the casita if you want to use it,â Gloria said.
I thought he was looking more at me. Maybe I was hoping. Seeing him shirtless revived the images I had conjured during Gloriaâs description of their lovemaking.
He nodded at the casita. âLetâs check it out,â he said. He circled around our net and tapped me on the rear with his racket.
âYouâre good,â he said. âI think I was playing against you mostly.â
âSheâs always been more athletic than I am,â Gloria said as we started for the casita.
âI had no choice. My father wanted a boy he could wrestle,â I told him.
âYeah. Your father was a college wrestler, right?â
âInto the finals,â Gloria said. âWe have some trophies lost among the replicas of the Academy Awards,â she added, surprising me.
